The olive grove and the oil mill
A walk through the centuries…
The Villa is surrounded by 25 hectares of land that hosts 2500 specimens of centuries-old Tonda Iblea olive trees, an indigenous cultivar of south-eastern Sicily that for many centuries continues to give an oil with excellent characteristics.
It is possible to admire the longevity of the trees, evidenced by their twisted and picturesque trunks, an indelible trace of the passage of the Arab-Norman civilisation.
In the months following the summer, you can also attend the olive harvest, follow the process of olive oil production from the field to the mill.
Oil, a family tradition
Take a relaxing walk among the centuries-old olive trees and then visit the old oil mill, with the ancient lava stone mill one rotated by mules , the ancient hand-dug stone tanks and the scent of olives that perfume the air.
Dating from the early 1700s and used until the mid-1950s, the oil millis now a museum space where you can discover the history of Villa Zottopera oil and reserve your own extra virgin olive oil tastings.
